The winter holidays are upon us, and what better way to make the most of this joyful season than by sprucing up your home with some fun and creative DIY projects? Embrace the festive spirit and transform your happy home into a cozy, personalized haven. Whether you’re looking for small enhancements or considering ambitious endeavors, here are some fun ideas to get your creative juices flowing and keep the kiddos busy this Christmas break.

1. Outdoor Fire Pit

Take advantage of the cooler weather and build an outdoor fire pit to gather around with friends and family. Not only does it add warmth to chilly evenings, but it also creates a charming focal point for your outdoor space. Consider using local Texas stones for a rustic and authentic touch.

2. Customized Wreaths

Put your creative talents to the test by crafting personalized wreaths for your front door or interior spaces. Incorporate native Texan flora like pinecones, magnolia leaves, or even cotton stems for a unique and regional flair.

3. Festive Light Displays

Illuminate your home with a stunning display of lights. Create a breathtaking arrangement along your roofline or landscape with dazzling LED lights. Add a Texan twist by using cowboy boot or star-shaped lights for an extra touch of charm. If you use neutral colors, you can keep them up all year!

4. Handcrafted Furniture

Channel your inner craftsman and build bespoke furniture pieces. Whether it’s a reclaimed wood coffee table or a set of wooden shelves, personalized furniture adds character and elegance to your home. Texas has a wealth of reclaimed materials to explore, giving your creations a distinctive local flair.

5. Herb Garden Indoors

Bring a bit of greenery indoors by setting up a DIY herb garden. Use decorative pots or mason jars to plant herbs like rosemary, cilantro or basil. Not only do they provide fresh ingredients for your culinary endeavors, but they also infuse your home with natural scents and colors. Take it one step further and plan a crafts day with the kids and paint the pots together with flowers, lady bugs, turtles – whatever they like.

6. Accent Wall Revamp

Transform a plain wall into a captivating accent with a fresh coat of paint or unique wallpaper. Experiment with vibrant Texan-inspired colors or patterns to enliven your living space. Consider incorporating motifs like Lone Star patterns or desert landscapes if you want to keep it puro San Anto, as we say.

7. Customized Corkboard or Pinboard

Create a functional yet stylish corkboard or pinboard to organize your space. Use a rustic wooden frame or repurpose old picture frames for a vintage feel. Personalize it further by adding Texan-themed fabric or pins shaped like iconic state symbols.

8. Home Theater Installation

Turn a spare room or basement into an entertainment hub by setting up a home theater system the whole family can enjoy. Install a projector, comfortable seating, and ambient lighting for a cinematic experience right at home. Just don’t forget the vintage popcorn maker!

9. Upcycled Décor

Give new life to old items by upcycling them into decorative pieces. From mason jar lanterns to repurposed wine barrel furniture, the possibilities are endless. Unleash your inner artist and let your Texas roots inspire your designs.

10. Cozy Reading Nook

Create a serene reading corner by incorporating comfortable seating, warm blankets and shelves filled with your favorite books. Add Texan charm with cozy throw pillows featuring local landmarks or landscapes.

With these DIY projects, you can infuse your home with personalized touches that reflect you and your family’s style and celebrate the holiday season. Embrace the spirit of creativity and craftsmanship and make this winter break a time to cherish by creating lasting memories within the comfort of your own home. Happy holidays and happy crafting!

We’d like to introduce you to our phenomenal residential designer, Shawn Campbell of Campbell Designs. He’s the gentlemen responsible for creating the magnificent custom home designs for our clients. He’s able to take all your dreams and aspirations for your new home and translate them into a plan from which we build. It’s fair to say, we couldn’t do it without him!

Shawn started his career as a residential designer in Dallas over 20 years ago. When he began, he was even drawing by hand. This was before the inception of the advanced designing software commonly used today.

We’ve been working with Shawn for over 10 years now. When we sat down with him to ask his advice on how to help make the process more seamless for our clients, he offered these tips

  • Know what you want. So many people get started but don’t really know what they want, which results in having to continually make changes, costing time and money.
  • Have a firm grasp of your budget. Coming in with a clear budget helps inform, not just the design, but every element of the entire project.
  • Make a list of your priorities. What aspects of your new home are most important to you? Say, for example, you know you want a luxurious primary bath, a three car garage and a really amazing view of the lake, then that’s our starting point, and we design the layout of the home around those priorities.
  • Be open to alternatives within your budget. While we always really appreciate the photos people find in magazines and online of home elements that they really like, it’s often those really cool details that get cut because of budget restrictions. However, I do my best to give the client what they want while making the house affordable and buildable. For example, a lot of people want curtain walls these days (with the metal frames and glass in-between) but they’re very expensive, so alternatively, I can implement large windows with wood frames that are close together, giving it a similar effect.

Trends Shawn is seeing in new home designs:

  • What’s still really popular right now is the modern farmhouse design, with one big rectangle as the layout for the main public spaces that includes a kitchen on one side, dining table in the middle and the living room on the other side. I haven’t designed a formal living room or dining room in a long time.
  • As you might imagine, we’re still seeing more home offices.
  • Guest rooms and kids’ rooms are getting a little bit smaller, as they’re less of a priority.
  • Not everyone ones likes a soaker tub in the primary bath anymore. It’s nice to have, but not everyone really uses it.

Shawn has worked with several builders over the years and still does. He told us: If anyone asks me which builder I recommend, I always recommend you.

Thank you, Shawn, we feel the same way!

If you’re in the process of designing your dream luxury home in the heart of Texas (and we hope you are!), you’re likely searching for ways to incorporate the latest technology and conveniences into your living spaces. One area that’s often overlooked but offers immense potential for innovation is the bathroom. Smart bathrooms, with their cutting-edge features, have become a hallmark of modern luxury homes, and here’s why you should consider implementing them in your new home.

Effortless Convenience

Smart bathrooms offer a level of convenience that is unparalleled. Imagine walking into your bathroom in the morning, and the lights automatically brighten to your preferred level, while the floor heating system gently warms your feet. Your smart mirror displays the day’s weather forecast and your calendar appointments, ensuring you’re always well-prepared for the day ahead.

Energy Efficiency

In Texas, where temperatures can be extreme, energy-efficient solutions are essential. Smart bathrooms can help you reduce energy consumption. Smart thermostats can regulate the temperature in your bathroom, ensuring you have a comfortable space when you need it and are saving energy when you don’t.

Customizable Shower Experiences

Luxury is all about choice, and smart bathrooms offer the ultimate in customization. High-tech showers come with an array of options, such as adjustable water pressure, temperature control, and even built-in speakers to set the mood with your favorite tunes. Some even have presets for different family members so everyone can enjoy their ideal shower experience.

Cutting-Edge Toilets

When it comes to toilets, the future is now. Smart toilets have heated seats, built-in bidets with customizable water pressure and temperature, and self-cleaning capabilities. Some models even have air purifiers and deodorizers, ensuring the bathroom remains a pleasant and inviting space.

Enhanced Safety

Safety should never be overlooked in a luxury home. Smart bathrooms can incorporate features like anti-slip flooring, automatic night lights, and emergency alerts that can notify you or a loved one in case of a fall or other emergency.

Add Value to Your Home

Investing in smart bathroom features can significantly increase the resale value of your custom home. Potential buyers are increasingly looking for homes with integrated smart technology, and having a modern, well-equipped bathroom can set your property apart from the rest.

Future-Proofing

Technology is advancing at a rapid pace, and smart bathrooms are no exception. When you design your home with smart bathroom features, you’re future-proofing your investment. Many systems can be updated or expanded as new technology becomes available, ensuring your home remains at the cutting edge of convenience and efficiency.

Incorporating smart bathrooms into your next custom home isn’t just a trend; it’s practical and forward-thinking. With the benefits of convenience, energy efficiency, customization, and enhanced safety, your home will become a haven of modern luxury. Summer is the perfect time to get your hands dirty and build something new! Whether you’re looking for a weekend project or something to keep you busy the rest of the summer, there are plenty of DIY building projects to tackle. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Build a patio bench. This is a great project for beginners that brings a lot of added value with extra seating for your patio. All you need is some wood, screws and a few tools.
  • Build a birdhouse. This is another wonderful project for beginners, and it’s a fun way to attract beautiful birds to your backyard. All you need is some wood, nails and a few tools. The one featured in the photo above, made by local artist Betsy Wunderlick Gruy (@sugarloose on Instagram) features a mosaic design with glass tile. It may be a bit more advanced, but it gives you an idea of just how creative you can be.
  • Build a garden shed. This is a more challenging project, but it’s an excellent way to add some extra storage space to your backyard. You’ll need some basic carpentry skills, but there are plenty of tutorials available online and in home improvement stores.
  • Build a play-set for your kids. The kiddos will thank you for this one! There are plenty of different types of play-sets available, so you can find one that fits your budget and your backyard.
  • Build a treehouse. This project may also require a bit of skill, but it’s the perfect way to give your kids a special place to play that’s all their own, with the added benefit of giving them a sense of accomplishment, if they’re able to help. You will need some basic carpentry skills, but we know you’ve got this!

The good news is it’s easy to find plenty of helpful tutorials online or even in home improvement stores for all of these.

No matter what project you choose, make sure to wear safety glasses and gloves when working with tools. And always consult with a professional if you’re not sure how to do something. With a little effort, you can build something amazing this summer!

As we all know, the summer heat in South Texas can be brutal, but it doesn’t mean you have to give up on your backyard. With a few simple adjustments, you can turn your backyard into an oasis that you’ll enjoy spending time in all season long.

Minimize Direct Sun on Your Back Patio

One of the best ways to stay cool in the summer is to minimize direct sun on your back patio. There are a few different ways to do this. One option is to install a shade sail or canopy. There are a million options out there, so just search to see all the various designs and find one that suits your style, but the idea is this will provide a shady spot where you can relax and enjoy the outdoors. Alternatively, you can plant trees or shrubs around your patio to create a natural barrier from the sun. Although this might not solve the problem this summer, unless you purchase mature plants.

Add Some Water Features

Adding some water features to your backyard is a great way to cool things down. A fountain, pond, or even a simple water table can help create a more relaxing atmosphere. The water will also evaporate, which will help to cool the air around you.

Install Some Fans

Installing some fans around your backyard can aid in keeping the air circulating and help you stay cool. You can also use misting fans to create a cool mist that will evaporate sweat and keep you feeling refreshed.

Take Breaks in the Shade

If you’re spending time outdoors, it’s important to take breaks in the shade. This will help to keep you from overheating and getting sunstroke. You should also drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. We all know this, but it’s easy to forget to drink enough water in this heat! Along those lines, it’s also important to wear sunscreen when you’re outdoors, even if it’s cloudy. The sun’s rays can still damage your skin, particularly when you can’t feel the heat.

By following these tips, we hope you can transform what might be a dreaded backyard at the moment into an oasis where you can relax and enjoy spending time all summer long. If you need help building a new backyard (along with your brand new custom home), you know where to find us!

Contemporary Sputnik Chandelier with Murano Glass from Pamano.com

As a luxury custom home builder, we understand that one of the most exciting aspects of building a new home is choosing the style and design elements that will make it unique and special. While modern and contemporary styles are popular choices, many homeowners are drawn to classic architectural styles such as mid-century modern, Victorian and Art Deco. Let’s explore these three styles and discuss how you can incorporate classic elements into your new home.

Mid-Century Modern: Clean Lines and Minimalism

Mid-century modern homes were popular in the 1950s and 1960s and are characterized by their clean lines, minimalism, and integration with nature. If you’re drawn to this style, here are some ways you can incorporate it into your new home:

  1. Floor-to-Ceiling Windows: Floor-to-ceiling windows are a hallmark of mid-century modern architecture and can create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living spaces.
  2. Flat Roofs: Flat roofs are another classic feature of mid-century modern homes and can give your home a sleek and modern look.
  3. Statement Lighting: Unique lighting fixtures such as Sputnik chandeliers or Nelson Bubble Lamps can add a touch of mid-century modern style to any room in your home.

Victorian: Ornate Details and Grandeur

Victorian homes were popular in the late 19th century and are notable for their ornate details and exceptional grandeur. If you’re drawn to this style, it’s easy to understand. Here are a few elements you can add to your home to capture the Victorian vibe!

  1. Turrets and Gables: Turrets and gables are classic features of Victorian homes that can significantly create a sense of grandeur and elegance to your home’s exterior.
  2. Intricate Woodwork: Victorian homes are renowned for their intricate woodwork, such as gingerbread trim, brackets and, of course, spindles. Incorporating these details into your new home can infuse it with Victorian charm and character.
  3. Stained Glass Windows: Stained glass windows are another hallmark of Victorian homes and can add a colorful and artistic touch to any room in your home. Finding a local artist to create a one-of-a-kind piece for you will make it all the more special.

Art Deco: Geometric Shapes and Glamour

Art Deco homes were popular in the 1920s and 1930s and are distinguishable by their geometric shapes, bold colors and glamour. Here’s how you can incorporate one of our favorite classic design styles into your new home:

  1. Streamlined Design: Art Deco homes are largely known for their streamlined and sleek designs. Incorporating clean lines and geometric shapes into your home’s architectural design is what will surely set it apart from your neighbors.
  2. Bold Colors: Bold colors such as black, white and gold are classic Art Deco colors and can enhance that glamour look and sophistication to your home’s interior.
  3. Mirrored Surfaces: Mirrored surfaces such as mirrored furniture or mirrored walls were popular in Art Deco homes and can make your home shine like you’re a Hollywood star!

When you’re ready, we can work with you to incorporate these classic elements into your home’s design to create a true masterpiece that reflects your unique style and personality – as unique as your signature!
